International student programme at Chilton

International students are valued members of the Chilton family and mix with New Zealand students every day on the single campus at Waterloo Road.

Academic programmes have been designed for students who wish to graduate from secondary level with excellent grades to attend university.

Junior School

Chilton welcomes international students into the Junior School.  Students from the age of 5 through to10 are able to request a place in our vibrant Junior School.  In addition to the national curriculum our young students are taught the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme which enhances and enriches their experiences.

The New Zealand Government requires that students of this age live with their parent or a court approved guardian.

Secondary

Secondary schooling at Chilton Saint James School starts at Year 7 (age 11). Year 7 and 8 students follow a timetable similar to that of the more senior students. As a result, our students quickly become familiar with the teaching styles of our specialist teachers as they enter secondary level schooling. They also become confident moving around the school, taking responsibility for their belongings as they move and being taught in specialist rooms.

Most subjects are taught in form class groupings of no more than twenty-four students during the first four years at secondary level. Form teachers have primary responsibility for the welfare of their form and reporting to parents.
Form teachers are supported by a well-structured pastoral care system.

The philosophy of the secondary level curriculum is to expose students to a broad core of compulsory subjects in their early years so that they can make increasingly informed option choices as they progress through the school.

It is a feature of the school that girls continue to study Religious Studies and take part in Physical Education lessons through to Year 13. Health lessons include Careers Education from Year 7 and Leadership and Life Skills in the two senior secondary years.

Graduates who successfully complete Year 13 can expect their academic qualification to be accepted for entry to any western university and to be well equipped to study at tertiary level in an English speaking environment.

Curriculum

At Chilton Saint James School, the focus is on academic achievement at a level to match your ability. The goals and learning needs of each international student are individually assessed when she enters the School. The results of this assessment will determine the level of support they will need throughout the academic year.

International Integrated Programme features include:

  • English Language programmes from 4-6 hours a week, which can prepare you for entry into mainstream classes
  • a multi level programme that may be structured depending on a girl's goals and abilities
  • continuing lessons in English as a Second Language, depending on the programme followed
  • senior students preparation for NCEA qualifications.
