Dance Curriculum


Classical Ballet

Preschool Dance for Fun
The Preschool Dance for Fun class offers 3 and 4 year old students the chance to experience ballet, jazz and tap dance in a fun environment.

Preparatory Ballet
Beginner Ballet class for students turning 5 years old during 2012.


Pre Primary in Dance – Solo Seal
The Chilton Dance Centre’s training is based on the Royal Academy of Dance syllabus (commonly known as the RAD www.rad.org.nz).  Annual examinations from Pre Primary in Dance through to Solo Seal are available for students wishing to follow this examination system.  All students wishing to enter for exams must fulfil class attendance requirements and achieve the Dance Centre’s technical standard.

Open Technique / Pointe classes

Senior students are encouraged to participate in Open Classical and Pointe Classes which are non syllabus based but designed to extend each student both technically and artistically to enable them to think and perform beyond the structure of a set syllabus.

Medal test classes
These classes are a wonderful opportunity to extend the students.  Medal classes will only be run for Term Two with the test being taken in Term Three.  This class is available to ballet students from Grades 2 upwards and gives the students the opportunity to dance solo while strengthening their technique and performance skills.  The Medal Test will be held in front of an examiner and an invited audience of friends and family.


Jazz

Pre Grade – Solo Seal
The Chilton Dance Centre training in Modern Jazz is based on the New Zealand Association of Modern Dance syllabus.  Jazz dance classes are available to students from 5 years old, with students having the opportunity to enter annual examinations if they wish to follow the examination system. Students also have the opportunity to enter a Medal Test where they perform their Jazz dance solo in front of an examiner and an invited audience of friends and family.  All students wishing to enter for exams must fulfil class attendance requirements and achieve the Dance Centre’s technical standard.

Musical Theatre Dance

Musical Theatre Dance classes will be available to students with dance training to Intermediate Foundation / Pre Elementary standard and above. Students will learn dances from Musicals such as Cats, Fosse, Chicago, High School Musical and more.  Check the Dance Centre Handbook (available at School Reception) for enrolment in appropriate level.

Open Jazz class

Open Jazz class is for senior students and is designed to extend the student's jazz technique and style and enable them to think and perform beyond the structure of a set syllabus.


Contemporary Dance

Contemporary dance classes are available for students from Advanced Foundation and above. It is recommended that senior classical ballet students attend a Contemporary lesson as part of their weekly programme to assist with dynamics, strength, agility, body and spatial awareness. Check the Dance Centre Handbook (available at School Reception) for enrolment in appropriate level.

Lyrical / Contemporary
Lyrical / Contemporary introduces students from 10 years old to the Contemporary Dance Technique.  Check the Dance Centre Handbook (available at School Reception) for enrolment in appropriate level.


Tap

The Chilton Dance Centre Tap training is based on the New Zealand Association of Modern Dance Tap syllabus.  Annual examinations are available for students wishing to follow this examination system.


Hip Hop

Hip Hop classes are available for students from 8 years old.  The Dance Centre will offer the students the opportunity to enter New Zealand Association of Modern Dance Hip Hop examinations and/or Medal Tests if they wish to follow the examination system.


Adult Classes

Ballet
The Chilton Dance Centre offers adult classes in Ballet.  These classes do not require any previous experience and are designed as an introduction to dance for the beginner and also for students returning to dance after an absence. Classes are open technique and offer adults the opportunity to attend weekly classes which will provide an excellent all-round exercise programme with emphasis on:  safety, posture, flexibility, co-ordination, rhythm and musicality.  It will strengthen, firm and tone the entire body and provide excellent technical skills for other dance, sport and fitness related classes in a closely monitored and safe teaching environment.

Pilates
Pilates class is available to dance students from 13 years old and to adults wishing to develop their core strength and stability through a Pilates mat class.
