It's not all work and no play at Chilton. Opportunities to extend experiences beyond the classroom are everywhere.
The Education Outside The Classroom (EOTC) programme Chilton extends throughout the Junior and Secondary Schools.
EOTC forms an important part of teaching the IB curriculum at Chilton, with visits to an enormous variety of places to open student’s eyes to the world around them. Some of the varied trips students took in 2010 include visiting museums, religious buildings such as mosques, other schools, businesses, garden centres, wildlife centres, parks, beaches and many other outdoor adventures.
Annual programmes for each year group are aim to:
We also encourage students to learn an appreciation for our unique New Zealand environment including visiting beaches, forests, rivers, mountains and snow.
Each year group has a different focus, for example in Year 7 we encourage students to learn how to take more responsibility for themselves, using experience of many outdoor activities from sailing in Wellington harbour to surfing, sea kayaking and camping.
The EOTC programme culminates at Year 12 with a 5 day trip to the renowned Sir Edmund Hillary Outdoor Pursuits Centre in Turangi.
To give an example of the programmes we are running this year for each year group in our Secondary School we have:
Year 7 – daily activities with a water theme
Year 8 – a camp in the Wairarapa including hiking, caving and rafting
Year 9 – travel to Kaiteriteri in the South Island and enjoy the wonderful Able Tasman national park
Year 10 – adventure camp in the Wairarapa including surfing and white water rafting
Year 11 – a leadership and teamwork three-day seminar
Year 12 – winter experience to the Sir Edmund Hillary OPC in June.
