Health Insurance for International Students

Most students are not entitled to publicly funded health services while in New Zealand unless they are:

  • A resident or citizen of Australia.
  • A national of the United Kingdom in New Zealand.
  • The holder of a temporary permit that is valid for two years.

If you do not belong to one of these special categories and you receive medical treatment during your visit, you may be liable for the full costs of the treatment.

Full details on entitlements to publicly-funded health services are available through the Ministry of Health.  These can be viewed on their website at www.moh.govt.nz

A personal insurance policy is a condition of enrolment

Insurance must cover the cost of medical treatment in New Zealand for the duration of your stay. The School also requires students to obtain cover for loss and damage of personal belongings and school fees.  We also strongly recommend that you obtain insurance to cover your travel to and from New Zealand.

Chilton recommends students to use Unicare as their insurance provider to cover all the emergencies mentioned.  The School is able to arrange this insurance for you upon request.  If you arrange the insurance yourself, once you are in New Zealand you must provide the School with evidence of the policy you have in place and the type of cover you have arranged.

The School will provide you with the insurance application package at your request.  All details of your insurance will be kept in your student file at School.

Chilton Saint James Fees Protection Policy

Chilton Saint James School has an international student fees protection policy to safeguard fees paid in advance for international students.  This policy ensures that any unearned portion of the fees would be refunded if the School were suspended or removed as a signatory to the New Zealand Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students, or if the student were required to transfer to another institution due to unforseen closure of Chilton Saint James School, or if a course were cancelled due to a Chilton business interruption.
