Parents

As a Chilton parent you are an integral part of the Chilton community.

Supporting your daughter as an international student

Every care is taken to ensure that international students are happy as they settle into life in a new country.  All teachers are available to assist students.  Several teachers the very special task of caring for international students:

Deputy Principal (International) – Mrs Judy Lang

Mrs Lang regularly visits the home countries of our international students to discuss enrolment, meet with parents where possible and better understand the needs of the girls who come to Chilton as international students.

Mrs Lang reports directly to the Principal and she is responsible for administration, homestays, welfare, class placements, arranging insurance and visa renewals and day to day communications. She also takes a major role in advising the Principal on policy making, pastoral care and marketing as they affect our international students.

Deans

The Year Level Deans are involved in overseeing each student’s progress, academically, socially, physically and culturally.  They are involved in speaking regularly with the teachers of each student to be sure that she is happy and that her academic work is of high quality.  The Year Level Deans are responsible for following up any student problems in consultation with senior staff.

Form Teacher

Each student is placed in a Form Class of about 24 students.  The Form Teacher makes sure that she is settled socially in the School and is making satisfactory progress.

Subject Teacher

Each student at secondary level will have five to six subject teachers.  It is an important part of all teachers' roles to make sure the girls are learning well in a safe and supportive learning environment so they can develop and maintain a positive attitude.

Homestay Manager

The Homestay Manager is responsible for the selection and monitoring of homestay families to ensure that the homes provide quality care for our students.  She meets new students from the airport and works with their homestay families to ensure they are settled quickly and happily into their new homes.

Communication Channels

Regular information about students and their academic progress is sent to parents and families of all students.  Chilton understands it is important for families be able to contact the School easily and fast.  This is especially true when your daughter is far away from home.  Chilton provides families with as much information as possible about their daughter such as:

  • weekly newsletters contain information about what is happening at the School
  • individual student reports are sent out regularly
  • the School encourages communication with the senior teachers by phone, email or in person
  • parents and families are welcome to visit the School.

Chilton Saint James School has agreed to observe and be bound by the Code of Practice for International Students published by the New Zealand Minister of Education.  Copies of the Code are available on request from the School.  All international students who come to Chilton are given a summary of the Code.  They can see how the Code is written to help them during their stay in New Zealand.  The Code can be viewed at www.minedu.govt.nz
