Congratulations to our 2010 Scholarship winners, collecting 19 Scholarships between them - 4 with Outstanding Performance.
Numeracy and Literacy are the cornerstones of the curriculum in PYP at Chilton. We cross-group to ensure that specific areas are targeted for extension or support and we individualise our programmes to ensure that they are tailored to suit the changing needs of our students. Social Studies, Science, Technology and Health are the arena in which we teach the inquiry, research and self-management skills that are crucial for us all as lifelong learners.
The conscious incorporation of computer access from Year 1 ensures that ICT skills are integrated across the curriculum.
From Years 1 - 6 the girls have class teachers who teach the core curriculum and specialist teachers who deliver the French, Spanish, Dance, Physical Education, Music and Instrumental programmes. We recognise that learning with specialists ensures our students are introduced to these disciplines by practitioners who have a real passion for, and expertise in, their subject areas.
In Year 2, learning to read evolves towards reading to learn. Learning about numbers develops towards sound numeracy skills and the girls enjoy growing expertise in the Ballet, Music, Physical Education and French programmes.
By Year 3 level, their developing fluency in French allows them wonderful experiences such as the annual Year 3 French Fashion Catwalk Extravaganza.
Spanish is introduced at Year 5 and, having prior experience in learning a language other than English, Chilton students are well-equipped to acquire knowledge of a new culture through this new language experience.
In Year 4, students are working comfortably at Level 2 of the New Zealand curriculum, with the opportunity to extend their learning into Level 3. They have become active inquirers and their learning programmes extend beyond the classroom through an exciting school camp and field trips. The Art programme, for example, is enhanced by visits to exhibitions of international artists and visits from local artists; ‘hands-on’ learning experiences enrich the Science, Social Studies and English programmes.
Entering Year 5, Chilton students have acquired the expertise and knowledge necessary for independent learning. They begin to pursue individualised programmes following pathways of personal interest and achievement using laptop computers to enhance both acquisition and presentation of information with opportunities for web design, podcasting and moviemaking.
At Year 6, students can reap the rewards of their capacity as independent learners. The development of the core academic, sporting and performing arts programmes ensures that students have the competence to really enjoy the challenge of new learning and performance opportunities. The Year 6 Exhibition in their final Term at Junior School gives the students an opportunity to put all of their learning into practice in a project and display that parents can also enjoy at the Exhibition launch.
At the completion of the PYP, students have enjoyed the advantages of an enriched curriculum including French, Spanish, Music, Instrument, Physical Education and Dance. They have computing experience and can apply a range of software programmes to research and report their learning. As they complete Year 6, Chilton students are identifiable as confident, self-motivated and independent learners, well prepared for the challenges of the secondary level years they are about to enter.
