What does this mean on a national scale?
28% of Chilton Year 13 students in 2010 achieved Scholarship awards. To put these results in a national context, approximately 3% of Year 13 students studying each subject at NCEA Level 3 are awarded Scholarship, if they reach the standard that has been set.
What are the academic benefits?
Scholarship candidates are expected to demonstrate high-level critical thinking, abstraction and generalisation, and to integrate, synthesise and apply knowledge, skills, understanding and ideas to complex situations. Scholarship exams enable candidates to be assessed against challenging standards, and are demanding for the most able candidates in each subject. Chilton encourages students to enter Scholarship exams to be the best that they can be in their chosen subject areas.
Why do students want to study for Scholarship?
Scholarship provides the dual benefits of recognition and monetary reward to top students in their last year of schooling. For those who gain one or two Scholarship passes, they receive a 'one-off' award of $500 per subject. Those who achieve three or more Scholarship passes (like Radhika and Mindy) gain a New Zealand Scholarship and the reward increases to $2,000 each year for up to three years as long as candidates maintain a 'B' grade average in tertiary study.
