From Chilton to university

Many international students at Chilton are looking for a pathway to university.  Chilton provides many different options which depend on the student's academic ability, her interests and her educational achievements.

University study in an English speaking country requires a high level of academic knowledge as well as an excellent command of academic English.  Chilton provides a supportive environment with small classes, so that every student has strong support to be more certain of success at University.  Most Chilton graduates do not have to spend time in a University Foundation class.

The New Zealand University Entrance Qualification is obtained after one year of successful study at Level 3 to achieve the New Zealand National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA).

It is not necessary to complete Levels 1 or 2 of NCEA before attempting Level 3.  However, many students who are able to spend three or more years at Chilton do complete all three levels.  As a result, they gain a firm foundation in both English and academic knowledge for successful university study.

Other senior international students come to Chilton with the academic knowledge to complete the Level 3 syllabus immediately.  Students with a very high level of academic English language can achieve success in one year.

For senior students who have the necessary academic knowledge, the Chilton 18-month International Academic Programme is a University Foundation programme that students study alongside New Zealand students.  This offers a fast pathway to university.  The International Academic Programme is scheduled from July to December of the following year.  Successful graduates can proceed directly to University study after the summer break.

University liaison officers visit the School to assist all students to choose courses of University study and the Chilton Careers department assists students to prepare the required documentation.
