Itinerant music tuition is offered in clarinet, cello, drums, flute, French horn, guitar, music theory, piano, recorder, saxophone, singing, speech and drama, trombone, trumpet and violin. The academic benefits of learning a musical instrument are well documented, and the stimulation of one-to-one teaching is beneficial to students. There are always opportunities to sit Grade Examinations and enter Regional Competitions.

Amity Alton Lee – Clarinet and Saxophone
Amity is a freelance musician with fourteen years teaching experience throughout the Wellington region. She holds an Honours degree in Saxophone performance and a Masters degree in Jazz Musicology from the New Zealand School of Music. Her performance career, spanning over twenty years has been incredibly diverse. Recent and upcoming performances include ‘Balkanistas’ in which she plays the Soprano and Baritone saxophone, fringe festival show ‘Women are from Mars’ in which she plays all four saxophones, clarinet and flute and ‘Esara Jazz Trio’ in which she plays the tenor saxophone. Amity has previously performed with the ‘No Strings’ clarinet quintet on bass clarinet, The Crofton Flute ensemble, Rodger Fox’s Wellington Jazz Orchestra, well known Wellington covers band ‘The Soulminerz’, ‘Big Trouble’ and ‘The Meow All Star Jazz Orchestra’ and the ‘National Youth Jazz Orchestra’.
Amity teaches saxophone, clarinet, flute, recorder, keyboard and piano at various primary and secondary schools and runs the popular central city teaching space ‘The Music Room’ together with her husband. She enjoys teaching students of all age groups, focusing on creating a fun, relaxed lesson environment where her students can grow their confidence as well as their instrumental and performance skills. Her favourite part of the teaching job is seeing her younger students perform in front of an audience for the first time.

Cecily is one of New Zealand’ s most distinguished teachers of Speech and Drama. She is a trained teacher who has taught at Primary, Secondary and Tertiary level and ran her own Oral Communication and Performance business for over 30 years. She holds Fellowships in both Speech and Drama and Public Speaking and Communication and is an examiner for Speech New Zealand.
She prepares students for Speech and Drama and Public Speaking examinations at all levels from Initial up to the three levels of both Performance and Teaching Diplomas (Years 3 – 13). Results are always of a very high standard. Over the last few years, a number of Chilton girls attained the outstanding achievement of completing their Associate Diploma in either Public Speaking and Communication or Speech and Drama in Year 13. She runs a special 12 week Communicating in Leadership Course for Year 11 students to help them prepare for school leadership roles in their senior years. She has both produced and taken leading roles in Pantomimes and plays with a Little Theatre group and produced plays for schools and Church groups.
She became a Trustee of the Board of Speech New Zealand 1995 and she has held the positions of Vice-Chairman and Manager of three Divisions – Examinations, Operations and Marketing. She has directed Seminars for the Board, helped write the Public Speaking and Speech and Drama Syllabuses and continues to prepare written material for both examiners and teachers.

After training as a Primary teacher, Annabelle began her vocal studies at Wellington Polytechnic (now Massey University). She then went on to twenty years based in London as a professional singer. She describes this as follows… “I was engaged by a wonderful “fixer” who sourced many varied and interesting jobs for me. I worked with directors who tested my dramatic skills in extraordinary ways which would not have happened had I stayed in New Zealand. Highlights include singing “Die Meistersinger” with the Royal Opera Covent Garden Chorus, “Lohengrin” at the Bayreuth Festival, “The Rakes Progress” Opera Factory London/Zurich and “Dining with Alice“ and “The Salisbury Proverbs “ for the Salisbury Festival. With the decision to return to New Zealand came the reality that I would not be able to support myself as a professional singer so I did my Certificate in Teaching through ABRSM. This was a most valuable start to being a singing teacher, especially having a mentor and being observed while teaching throughout the year course. ”Since returning to New Zealand, Annabelle has performed with the NZSO and Christchurch Symphony and been a preliminary judge for the Lexus Song Quest on two occasions. Annabelle maintains her leading profile as one of Wellington’s most sought after vocal tutors. Ongoing professional development is a high priority for her. She regularly attends Voice Conferences in New Zealand and Australia and has undergone Estille Voice Training Courses Level One and Two.

Rachelle graduated from Massey University with a BMus in Classical Flute, studying with Kirstin Eade, Carol Hohauser and Bridget Douglas. She is also completing a Graduate Diploma in Jazz Performance Flute at the NZSM, studying with Lex French.
While having played with Orchestra Wellington and the RNZAF Band, Rachelle has also played with some of New Zealand’s most well-known jazz artists, notably Jonathan Crayford and John Rae in the Troubles. She has also been a recording artist for a variety of projects around Wellington including film scores for Ewan Clark, and on albums for bands such as the Nudge and the Beastwars.

Mark Hanify is a free-lance musician, singer, composer, guitarist, pianist and band–leader. Alongside a successful performing career as a soloist and with his band, Mark is in demand as a teacher of guitar and band in Wellington Intermediate and Secondary schools. Mark also directs and leads one of Wellington’s most successful covers band, The Rattlers, as well as the successful Supermodel originals band. Since establishing themselves in 2008, Supermodel has toured internationally, released two successful albums and has featured on TV, in popular New Zealand music festivals and performed with other top New Zealand bands and solo artists.
Mark has a background of training in classical piano, guitar and singing. He has appreciation and performance knowledge of a wide range of musical styles from popular music, to jazz, musical theatre, opera and contemporary styles. He has also sung in high achieving choirs under nationally recognised conductors.
Mark enjoys sharing his love of music and is able to adapt his teaching style to the needs and interests of the individual student.

Barrett is Principal Trumpet of the Vector Wellington Orchestra. Barrett also performs around the globe with double platinum selling group The Black Seeds. Barrett is a skilled and experienced musician with many ensembles, styles and experience to his credit. Barrett holds a Master of Arts from the Royal Academy of Music in London along with a Licentiate to the Royal Academy of Music for Brass Education. Prior to his study abroad Barrett completed a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Trumpet and gained an Honours degree in Classical Trumpet from the New Zealand School of Music, Wellington and has recently been an artist teacher at the New Zealand School of Music.
He is one of the most prolific brass players to have emerged from New Zealand in recent years. He gave his first concert at the young age of seven in the Timaru community school band. While studying in the United Kingdom Barrett’s teachers included Rod Franks, Mark David, Bob Farley and the late James Watson.
Being a versatile musician, Barrett has played under the baton of Sir Colin Davis, James Judd, Sir Mark Elder and Yannick Nézet-Séguin. Performing with the London Sinfonietta, New London Orchestra, London Arts Orchestra, the Royal Academy Symphony Orchestra/Brass Soloists/Early Music Ensemble, Manson Ensemble, New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, National Brass Band (NZ), NZ Army Band, Reinhold Friedrich, Daniel Bedingfield, Gerard Presencer, Simon O’Neill and Dame Kiri Te Kanawa to name a few.
Prizewinner of several competitions (Including the Royal Academy of Music United Music Publishers performance Prize in 2009 with Organist Nikolia Eckertova) Barrett enjoys a varied career as an orchestral musician, Educator, and commercial Musician. He has performed with many orchestras and ensembles in many styles throughout the world in countries such as USA, Canada, Singapore, England, Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, China, The Middle East, Greece, Australia and New Zealand.

Jo Hodgson – Voice
Jo Hodgson, Jo continues to enjoy a distinguished career as a solo performer in Wellington Musical Theatre, New Zealand Opera and other ensembles. She has performed solo and chorus roles in Godspell, Evita, Les Miserables, My Fair Lady, Beauty and the Beast, as well as classical operas Fidelio and Carmen.
This year, Jo has gained the principal role of Mrs Noah in the NZ Opera Production of Britten’s Noye’s Floode, for the International Arts Festival.
Jo is also a distinguished choral singer, having been a member of New Zealand’s internationally awarded choir, Tower Voices New Zealand. She is currently a member of Wellington Choir Nota Bene.
Jo currently tutors in Wellington children’s musical theatre programmes, as well as Moving 2 the Beat, her own children’s Preschool – 7 years music / dance and drama programme. Jo also teaches piano to junior level.
Irina Kouzminova – Piano

Irina Kouzminova holds a Diploma in Music (Performance) and a Master of Arts degree from St Petersburg University. Since immigrating to New Zealand from Russia 19 years ago, Irina has established herself as one of Wellington’s foremost ballet pianists and music teachers. She is the pianist for the New Zealand School of Dance the Royal New Zealand Ballet, Whitirea Polytechnic’s Commercial Dance Course, Chilton Dance Centre, as well as playing for Royal Academy of Dance Grade examinations. Irina is an Associate of NZ Institute of Registered Music Teachers, teaching piano privately and in schools.
Kate Lineham – Voice

Soprano Kate Lineham was born in New Zealand but has travelled far with her singing, both physically and stylistically. After her performance degree at Victoria University, she took up a three-year opera scholarship to the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. She then worked in England, Australia, New Zealand and Japan as a professional Music Theatre singer, actor and dancer, including playing the lead roles in Showboat, My Fair Lady and Phantom of the Opera. She has performed as a soloist with almost all of NZ’s professional orchestras, and has sung frequently with contemporary music ensemble Stroma including the highly demanding soprano role in Chaplin Operas for the International Festival of the Arts. She has performed many roles for NBR New Zealand Opera, and is currently one of their Resident Artists. She has toured with her trio Elixir for Chamber Music New Zealand, and was subsequently an artist in residence for their education programme.
Kate has also been seen many times on TV and in film both as a singer and as an actor and has taught voice and instrumental music for 25 years. She was a founding member of the saxophone quartet Saxcess, announces for Radio New Zealand Concert and has gained her black belt in Taekwon Do.

Janey has a Bachelor of Music in piano performance from the University of Auckland. She has also studied voice in the UK, and more recently in New Zealand with the late distinguished singer and teacher Donald Munro. Janey combines an active singing career with teaching voice and piano privately and in two secondary schools, and is a sought after accompanist. She is also enjoying co-directing two school choirs. Janey has sung operatic roles for the NZSO, Wellington City Opera, Academy Opera, Sirius Opera, and Pocket Opera. A long-time member of the Chorus of New Zealand Opera she has sung in seasons of more than twenty five operas. She has performed as soprano soloist in much of the major choral repertoire including Verdi and Mozart’s Requiems, Handel’s Messiah, Bach’s Magnificat, Beethoven Choral Symphony, The Creation (Haydn) Mozart’s C Minor Mass. A member of the established vocal quartet BRIO, she also regularly gives solo recitals.

Hugh is one of Wellington’s leading pianists and professional accompanists. He is a sought after pianist accompanist, music director and teacher. Hugh directs the Chilton Amadeus Orchestra, and assists with accompanying at exam and assessment time in many secondary and tertiary music departments. When not working at Chilton, he plays in classical and jazz ensembles and concerts, acts as Musical Director for the Wellington Gilbert and Sullivan Light Opera Society, a nd is an accompanist for exams, auditions, and shows at Toi Whakaari. He also makes CDs for singers and instrumentalists to rehearse with so they’re ready for rehearsal with a real pianist when the time comes. “I am a self-employed pianist, teacher and musician, classically trained and passionate about communicating the joy and pleasure understanding music can give. I love music and what it can do for people, and believe that it can help people lead a more satisfying and stress-free life”.

Sarah is the latest addition to the Chilton Itinerant programme. She is currently a part-time teacher in the Secondary school, and is co-director of the Chilton Vivace and Korimako Choirs. Sarah is an experienced professional singer, having performed with Canterbury Opera, and also as a soloist in a variety of Musical Theatre roles. She is an experienced teacher of Music, especially singing, including teaching choirs and individual singing tuition in International schools overseas.

Maurice Phillips – Drums
Maurice Phillips’ name is synonymous with drums and percussion! He is arguably Wellington’s best known and most respected exponent of drums and percussion as both a performer and a charismatic teacher. Maurice has been teaching drums and percussion at Chilton and other selected schools in the Hutt Valley for many years. He as also played in some of Wellington’s top bands, currently the highly successful Shenanigans.
Maurice established the Chilton Drum Corps a few years ago, and this group has established a reputation for its polished exciting performances. Maurice’s teaching programme includes all styles from contemporary, to jazz, Latin Rock and also includes teaching music reading of percussion and drum kit scores. He also teaches tuned percussion such as marimba.
Kirsten Robertson – Piano

Kirsten graduated from the University of Canterbury with a MMus in performance piano, studying with Diedre Irons. In New Zealand she won ‘Young Performer of the Year’ and was a finalist in the National Concerto Competition. Kirsten studied at the Royal College of Music, where she was a finalist for the concerto competition and was awarded two distinctions for piano accompaniment. She graduated with a PGDip and PGDip.adv in Performance and later worked as a staff accompanist at the RCM. In 2010 Kirsten received an AMP scholarship to study with renowned pianists Warren Jones pianist Michael Endres.
Kirsten has performed respected New Zealand performers such as Sir Howard Morrison, Anna Leese, Hayley Westenra and Natalia Lomeiko. She has accompanied for on the Solti Te Kanawa Accademia Di Bel Canto in Italy, with classes given by internationally recognised singers including Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and Jose Carreras. Kirsten has accompanied Dame Malvina Major for her New Zealand tours and for her CD. Kirsten has toured with Chamber Music New Zealand and worked as an accompanist for New Zealand Opera. Currently, Kirsten performs regularly with the NZSO as an orchestral pianist and is the Wind Accompaniment Co-ordinator at the NZ School of Music in Wellington.

Born and raised in Auckland, Madeline Sakofsky began a Bachelor of Music degree in 1992 at the University of Auckland which she completed in Melbourne at the Victorian College of the Arts three years later. During this time she studied oboe with Stanley Jackson and with Anne Gilby.
In 1995 Madeline headed for Germany where she completed two post-graduate diplomas in performance music, firstly in Mannheim studying with Prof. Winfried Liebermann, and then in Cologne with Prof. Christian Schneider. During this time she played with many orchestras, including the Cologne Chamber Orchestra, the Volkwang Chamber Orchestra in Essen, and the Philharmonic Orchestra of Hagen.
Upon returning to New Zealand in 2000, Madeline took up the position of Associate Principal Cor Anglais/Oboe in the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, which she held until moving to Wellington in 2009. She performs regularly with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and the Vector Wellington Orchestra as well as chamber music with the Nikau Trio.
Lynne Scott – Violin, Recorder and Theory

Lynne is a multi-instrumentalist with a special interest in Scottish folk music as well as classical music. Lynne is the co-ordinator of the Chilton Junior Instrument programme, directs and conducts the Junior Giovane Orchestra, and is co-director of the Chilton Secondary Amabile orchestra, as well as the senior orchestra at the Gallery Music Centre. Lynne enjoys arranging music for instrumental groups and is fluent in Sibelius -the musical notation computer programme. Her teaching approach is holistic, aiming to give every student a solid grounding in musical theory, technical development and above all, a love of making music. Preparation for examinations is available on request. Outside of teaching, Lynne plays violin in the Hutt Valley Concert Orchestra, and also greatly enjoys playing fiddle, accordion and piano in Scottish dance bands and developing her own fiddling skills.

Anthea began her violin studies as a Trainee for 4 years in the Schola Musica, a small training group attached to the NZSO. In her final year, she was nominated as Leader of the NZ National Youth Orchestra, which toured Aberdeen, London, Hong Kong, Beijing, and Tokyo. After successfully auditioning for the NZSO, she enjoyed 8 exciting years playing for the Orchestra, leaving to have a family in 1983. In 1990 she began a long career in the Wellington Orchestra, playing subscription concert series, and many ballets and operas. During this time, she has been actively teaching and supporting young people as they begin their studies, and focussing on working towards music examinations. Anthea is an active chamber music player, and has developed the Chilton Legato Strings, which is a string group designed to give more able students experience in playing and performing chamber music.

Caryl teaches trumpet and other brass instruments at Chilton. She also assists Lynne Scott with the Giovane Junior School Orchestra. Caryl is a professional French horn player having studied horn performance at Victoria University as well as completing her B.A. At the end of this time she gained her Teaching Diploma and travelled overseas for two years gaining further study with horn lessons from various teachers and performing in orchestras.
Caryl works as a freelance horn player and has played in a number of groups including the NZSO. Recently she performed with the Napier Operatic Society in their performance of Phantom of The Opera. Caryl teaches Brass and piano at a number of schools in the Hutt Valley and Wellington. She really enjoys passing on her love of music to young people.

Jane began cello lessons at the age of nine and, after participating in Coral Bognuda’s junior cello class, continued her studies at the University of Auckland, completing a Bachelor’s degree in 1990. Following a year of study in England with Jennifer Ward Clarke, she moved to the United States to take up a scholarship at the University of Arizona under Peter Rejto, and graduated with a Master’s degree in 1992.
After a further four years of teaching and performing throughout the United States and Mexico, Jane returned to New Zealand where she has played with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Wellington and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. She is an active chamber musician and has toured nationally for Chamber Music New Zealand.
As a teacher, Jane has a large number of private students of all ages. Her teaching approach is generally relaxed and flexible, tailored to each student according to their needs. Although students are encouraged to enter exams and competitions, this is not obligatory. However, it is vital that all students have some participation in ensemble playing such as orchestra or chamber groups, so these activities are always supported and performance opportunities facilitated.
