Welcome to Chilton Saint James School
Whether you are looking at a Preschool for your son or daughter, or a Primary or Secondary School for your daughter, a Golf Academy, a specialist Music and Ballet School, Saint James School may just be the one for you and your child.
A private school, located on an extensive campus in Lower Hutt, Chilton Saint James is just 15 minutes from the Wellington Central Business District. We pride ourselves on being student-centric and therefore our comprehensive learning experience is always planned with our students at the heart of it.
With small class sizes and highly skilled specialist teaching staff, it is our belief that the best education results when staff, students and parents work in partnership. Chilton girls are encouraged to realise the value of hard work and its relationship to academic and personal success. Attitude to learning and an environment where all girls can achieve is essential in preparing girls for the future. Coupled with this is that Chilton offers a pastoral care system that supports each individual and acknowledges a girl’s own uniqueness.
As a prospective parent we want you to get the most from our website so we have put the most commonly requested information within easy reach. Please use the side-bar navigation menu to learn more.
Your child may be the one heading off to school, but we understand that really it is the entire family that is part of the journey. We look forward to welcoming you into our Chilton family.
Getting Started at Chilton
The best way to select a school for your child is to come and visit. You are welcome to visit us any day or you can come and visit at our forthcoming Open Days.
A next step you may wish to take after visiting the campus is to have your daughter/son Spend a Day at Chilton within any area of the School.
Experiencing a normal school day at Chilton and attending classes with future classmates is a great way to help make a more informed decision about the best School for your child. While your child is in class, a full guided tour is in progress so that parents can experience the School in action. A special time can be set aside for prospective parents to meet with the respective Head of School so that questions can be answered in relation to each individual child’s needs. It is important for us to cater for the individual and we welcome the questions posed by parents.
The Principal is always available to meet with families and can converse about any area of the School. It would also be her pleasure to share Cambridge, the curriculum and examination system, with prospective parents. Likewise, parents who are seeking scholarships can gain extra information directly from the Principal.
The main intake levels at Chilton are:
- New Entrants / Year 1
- Year 7
- Year 9 There is also an Emerging cba for students in Year 9.
- cba – Chilton Ballet Academy – Year 10 upwards.
- Golf Academy – Year 8 upwards
- Chilton Music School Year 11 upwards. Emerging Chilton Music School – Years 8-10 in consultation with the Head of Music.
Places at other year levels are also available. Students can enter the Cambridge International Assessment Examinations system from Year 10-13
We recommend that you seek enrolment at Year 7 in preference to Year 9 if you are considering Chilton as your daughter’s secondary school due to the advantage of specialist teachers for all subjects at Year 7. This is not only important for the core subjects of English, Mathematics, Science and Social Sciences but also the opportunities for in-depth programmes in French, Chinese, Music, Te Reo and Art. The Middle School Curriculum prepares girls thoroughly for their Cambridge journey.
All prospective students are invited to attend an enrolment interview with the Principal and/or Heads of School, and have the opportunity to Spend a Day.
Above all, we look forward to sharing all that Chilton Saint James has to offer students and their families. The founder of Chilton, Geraldine Fitzgerald always believed that Chilton should be available to everyone. Hence, we invite anyone interested to commence a conversation with us about their daughter. It will be our pleasure to share all that we have to offer.
