Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)

The use of technology in education continues to evolve. Over the last few years we’ve seen a change in the way technology is used within our school environment. Computer use is no longer limited to IT labs and is being integrated into all subjects and classrooms. As this evolution continues it is important to continually address how and why we use devices in our teaching environment.

For 2019, the preferred device for students from Year 6 to Year 13 will be a laptop computer.

Preschool to Year 4

The School will continue to provide pods of ipads for use by Preschool through to Year 5. These will be managed by the school and are incorporated into the curriculum providing opportunities to expand knowledge and introduce new learning experiences.

Year 5 to Year 10 – BYOD Laptop

Younger students may prefer smaller laptops (11 to 13 inch screen size) for their lighter weight and ease of transport and use. Both Windows and Apple laptops will be suitable, however the limited functionality offered by Chromebooks means they are not appropriate.

Laptops should have a minimum of 4GB RAM and 128GB storage.

In order to access the School’s wireless network, all laptops are required to have a wireless network card that supports WPA2 encryption and is 802.11n or ac.

When selecting a device please ensure it has a suitable battery life for a full school day (at least six hours of use).

Year 11 to Year 13 – BYOD Laptop

Larger laptops (15 inch) will typically be more useful at the senior levels, though some students may still prefer the weight and portability advantages of smaller laptops (13 inch). Both Windows and Apple laptops will be suitable, however the limited functionality offered by Chromebooks means they are not appropriate.

Laptops should have a minimum of 4GB RAM and 128GB storage.

Students studying Music or Visual Arts will benefit from higher performing laptops. There has historically been a preference for Apple laptops because they are well equipped and previous software would only operate on Apple computers. Windows based laptops will be suitable for Music and Art as long as they are similarly equipped to Apple laptops (similar processors, RAM and storage).

In order to access the School’s wireless network, all laptops are required to have a wireless network card that supports WPA2 encryption and is 802.11n or ac.

When selecting a device please ensure it has a suitable battery life for a full school day (at least six hours of use).

Other useful information

  • Processor type and speed will impact the speed and performance of devices.
  • The industry is moving away from hard disk drives (HDD) for storage and newer devices will have solid state drives (SSD). While laptops with hard disk drives are often cheaper, those with solid state drives will operate much more quickly, last longer and are more durable.
  • HDMI ports (to connect to TV etc) may not exist in cheaper laptops.
  • The use of a case or bag to protect devices is highly recommended.
